 COVERS

High Quality CPR

  • CPR Compression Guidelines:
    Start compressions within 10 seconds

  • Adult:
    At least 2 inches deep; 100–120 compressions/minute

  • Child:
    About 2 inches or 1/3 chest depth

  • Infant:
    About 1.5 inches or 1/3 chest depth

The Chain of Survival

  • Recognition – Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activating the emergency response system

  • CPR – Early CPR with an emphasis on chest compression

  • Defibrillation – Rapid defibrillation with an AED

  • Advanced Care – Effective advanced life support is typically performed by advanced licensed rescuers and includes administration of medications

  • Post-Cardiac Arrest Care

Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)

  • An automated External Defibrillator is a light weight, portable, electronic device that can identify an abnormal heart rhythm that needs to be shocked. The AED then delivers an electric shock that can stop the abnormal heart rhythm

Choking

  • Adult and Child Choking

    If an adult or child has the inability to speak or breath or shows signs of cyanosis (turning blue) they may be choking. In an adult or child, you will perform abdominal thrusts to relieve choking

  • Infant Choking

    If an infant has the inability to cry or cough or shows signs of cyanosis (turning blue) they may be choking. In an infant, you will perform 5 back slaps followed by 5 chest thrusts to relieve choking

Frequently Asked Questions About AHA BLS and CPR Certification

BLS certification trains you to provide high-quality CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking for adults, children, and infants. It's essential for healthcare professionals and emergency responders.
BLS is designed specifically for medical professionals and includes advanced team-based scenarios, whereas general CPR or First Aid may focus more on bystander emergencies.
BLS does not include First Aid. It is designed for healthcare providers and focuses on CPR, AED use, and choking relief. If you're looking for CPR and First Aid together, we recommend taking a separate CPR and First Aid course. These are ideal for teachers, coaches, workplace responders, and the general public. The exam typically includes a 25-question open-book quiz and a hands-on skills test. You need about 84% to pass. We have a 100% pass rate with our students.

Our BLS classes typically take 3–4 hours. Renewal classes may be shorter, depending on the instructor and student pace.
If your BLS card is expired by more than 30 days, you must register for the Initial Certification course.
